Full Pieta (left)
Mary's Face and Head (right)
Our newest statue here at MPHM is the Pieta. This statue was first
designed by Michelangelo in 1499 at St Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo
was an Italian sculptor that lived from 1475 to 1564. The Pieta
consists of Mary holding Jesus after his crusifiction.Inside of St.
Peter's Basilica is the most beautiful of Michelangelo's Pieta's,
created when he was only 24 years old. It is made of
marble. When Michaelangelo overheard people talking about this
statue, he hurridly chiseled his name into a band across Mary's
dress. This was the only work that Michelangelo signed. The
Pieta was placed behind glass following an incident in 1972 when a
madman tried to smash the sculpture.
