The Interior of Church--The Nave
Page 4

Our church has seating for over 1000. Pews were introduced about the time of the printing press. Formerly the assembly stood. They were paticularly helpful during the Reformation, when sermons lasted several hours.

Nave Windows
The north nave windows depict the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary. The south nave windows depict the Glorious Mysteries. (Note: The fifth Glorious Mystery is located in the south transcept, and the fifth Joyful Myster is located in the north transcept.)

Joyful Mysteries

The Annunciation
The Visitation
The Nativity
The Presentation
Finding of the Child in the Temple

Glorious Mysteries
The Resurrection
The Ascension
Descent of Holy Spirit on Apostles
Assumption of BVM
Crowning of BVM as Queen of Heaven

Stained Glass Windows are a staple of church architecture, in addition to bathing the assembly area with their beautiful light, their purpose was to illustrate the stories of the Bible for who could not read or afford expensive manuscripts. They teach and remind us, and their artistic beauty inspires us and reveals to us something of the beauty of God. The Rose Window, west side of church, is 12 feet in diameter. It was donated by Ladies Sodality (now Women's Fellowship) as a memorial to their living and deceased members.

The Second Glorious Mystery:
The Ascension of Jesus

Seven arches
of laminated wood rise 65' high, giving the nave (Latin for "boat") the look of a hull of a ship. Seven is a significant number for several reasons: Consider, for example, that there are seven sacraments, seven Christian Virtues, seven joys and sorrows of Mary, seven Last Words of Jesus...

Stations of the Cross
From an early date pilgrims to the Holy Land would visit these stations, following in the footsteps of Jesus from Pilate's house to his entombment on Good Friday. During the Middle Ages the devotional Way of the Cross was made popular to enable those who could not afford the rigors and expense of a long pilgrimage to the Holy Land to participate in the passion of Jesus in their own villages. We pray this devotion specifically on the Fridays of Lent.
